CRP also provides free educational resources perfect for use in classrooms, museums, libraries, and other community organizations.
Past and Present Zine: Have students choose a contemporary topic with historic roots that’s meaningful for them and create a zine where they express a point of view on it. Use Chicory as a model or have students choose poems and images from Chicory in their zine. See an example created by Crystal Robinson, a student at Rutgers University-Newark.
Chicory Poetry Response Workshop: Download a lesson for a workshop where students respond to Chicory poems about celebrations, place, and identity in groups.Watch what students in Baltimore produced from this workshop.
Be Here Stories: Encourage your students to make connections between poetry and place with this activity. Students choose a poem from Chicory, assign it a location, write a response to it, and can upload it to the Baltimore Stories project. Listen to hear Rutgers University-Newark students’ audio essays in response to Chicory poems.
The CRP is available to provide workshops or programs to your organization.
One of our most popular is Remix and Response, an erasure poetry exercise where attendees black out words from a Chicory to create their own poem. We have offered this popular workshop at the Orser Center at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Red Emma’s bookstore, and Youth of the Diaspora, among others.
We also offer Between the Lines: Memory, Erasure & Reimagining Baltimore Through Chicory which engages attendees in hands-on activities of mapping, poetry writing, and visual arts to connect past and present, uncover hidden histories, and imagine new visions of the city together.
